[ Jayce instinctively answers the Leaf though he's in the middle of something, so the device is precariously perched against something on the edge of the desk. He looks over, then away, then back. ]
I do. I'm in it now, actually. [ He sets aside the spanner and wipes a smear of grease off his cheek. ] Realistically? Anything I can come up with the parts for. [ And that's not just bravado; Jayce does know what he's doing. ] But I don't make weapons. That is firmly behind me.
I am looking to construct an energy detector. The kind I am most familiar with is Radiation, but I am also looking to analyze the energy the fae use to power these 'leafs'. Perhaps it is used for other things.
If nothing else, I would know what tools you have at your disposal.
[ Brow furrowing, Jayce pouts briefly as he thinks that over. He's aware of the concept, but can't claim to have ever built something like that from scratch. ] I've been looking into that actually. Not these things exactly, [ and he gestures vaguely towards the screen. ] But the magic. I was working with someone trying to figure out where the court powers come from.
And I can see it now. Magic. [ Jayce sighs and adjusts his glasses, the ones Viktor had made him. ] I can see what I can come up with. If you have any kind of blueprint, we can work off of it, otherwise I'm starting from scratch.
You're welcome to come by and see. I've got access to a forge, metal-, wood-, and leather-working tools, and I can enchant. Not as good as the one in town but I won't charge what they do.
[ A short time later, Jayce is visited by Thanos, wearing a black tank top and trousers. As Thanos approaches the entryway to the workshop, he shrinks down from his natural height of 8'3", dropping down to a more convenient 6'.
He carries with him a piece of paper with a sketch drawn on in charcoal. ]
[ At the sound of the door opening, Jayce looks up and he recognizes the visitor from the call earlier. He offers him a quick smile, and says, ] I'll be right there.
[ And he wraps up what he was doing, walking over with a rag to try to get some of the grease off his hands. ] Let's take a look. [ Jayce gestures to the worktable that's actually clean for the moment so Thanos can put the sketch down while he fishes out a sheet of blueprint paper and a pen. ] Is this based on a design you've used before?
No. [ Thanos' mood was sour. He put the paper down on the desk. The design was simple; a glass vial with a metal needle inserted filled with noble gas. Electricity was fed into the chamber to give the gas a charge, and then the output was fed to a speaker. ]
The device is so simple and common I have only theoretical knowledge of its function. It will likely take many iterations to fine tune, unless you have more specific knowledge.
[ Jayce just nods and looks over the design. As he's sketching it onto his own paper, he leaves marks for measurements but leaves the actual numbers blank for now. ] This should be easy enough to replicate at least. How big is it?
[ He's guessing small, but to test it, he might work with it on a larger scale and then reel it back once he manages to get it to do what it's supposed to. ] I've seen things that we used to use to track the Gray and I'd started looking into something back home about picking up on errant magic from wild runes. I'm sure between that and this, I can work something out.
Very advanced ones fit in the palm of your hand. I imagine the prototype will be limited by the size of the electrical generator.
We will need to find a way to freeze a volume of air and capture the low reactivity gasses that vaporize before the oxygen does- if such elements even exist in this place. It is possible another, more easily acquired medium would suffice to detect the rays of ionizing radiation, but I do not know what that would be.
[ Thanos had no idea if this would even help, but at least it would eliminate possibilities. The Infinity Stones gave off Gamma Radiation, which would have been detectable by this device. The 'magic' of the fae could be another such type of ionizing radiation. ]
We can probably get to handheld, but not that small. Not with what we have access to here. [ Jayce frowns, but he is worried about getting the attention of the court leaders, too, considering they had taken an interest in Rikku's project before and it was clear they kept their eyes on the things the Adopted post though they never say anything. ]
This is going to take a while. [ Jayce started sketching other designs on the side of the paper, coils that could be used to condense the air, other things he would need to make any of this work. ] Just getting the materials is going to take me some time and I'll have to... uh, I don't know, build something outside to house this thing.
[ Pushing up, Jayce walked over to one of the storage cabinets, scanning through what he had in stock, and then moved to another, mentally making a list as he went. Jayce had to stop and lean against one of the counters as his leg started to ache, but he tries to look casual about it. ] Did you have a timeline you needed this by? I can't promise anything, since this is going to take a lot of experimentation, but I can do my best.
I can work with that. [ The wording triggers a flight response at the back of Jayce's mind, but he doesn't let on, just nodding along. ] I'll see what I can get my hands on and keep you updated on what I've got but you're welcome to come by any time I'm here to check in.

This is a step towards finding... independence from our 'benevolent' overlords.
There is no deadline. At the moment.
