[ Jayce hasn't been idle in the meantime, between working on his various projects and poking at research, he's kept himself busy. This morning, he's in and out of the shop a lot, running errands, checking on things, and stopping by a few fae he'd begun regularly working with and trading services for materials.
He'd just gotten back when a knock came at the door, which he missed, elbows deep in sorting through a mess of things he'd just brought back and completely transfixed by the task. Only the sound of a voice drags him out of his focus and he leans back far enough to see into the main shop. ]
Hey. I'll be right there. [ There's some noise from the back as he dumps everything he was working with onto the table and he steps out to greet him. ] Everything okay?
I'm as alright as anyone in this place can be, I suppose. [Regis could be worse off even with all the new memories and physical changes he has, so he's not going to tempt Fate--or the Fae--and say otherwise.]
We are overdue for a discussion and I apologize for that. Are you free by any chance or are you in the middle of something? I could hear a fair bit of banging around in there.
[ Jayce doesn't say that, at least for him, at least recently, things have been good. That doesn't mean he isn't worried about what's happening here, or these changes that are starting to happen, or about Runeterra, but he's... content, which is something he hadn't really felt in a long time. ]
I'm not working on anything time sensitive, so I'm free. I... yeah, sorry, I'm used to working alone or with Viktor and he's stopped noticing how loud I am, I think.
[Despite what Regis has just been through, he would be happy to hear how Jayce has been feeling. It's true they are stuck here and need to find a way home, but if one can be content while that's being worked on? All the better.]
I did get rather used to the loud sounds of Cid working on cars, so I bet you're right. In any event, if you want to keep tinkering while we talk, I have no problem with that. Sometimes, the mind works better that way, I've found. May I come in?
Once it's consistent, I think the brain can learn to tune it out. That's what happens to me anyway. [ It's the new noises that make him jump, but he's not going to admit that out loud. ] And yeah, sometimes it's easier to think if my hands are busy. If you don't mind, I could.
[ Grabbing something from the back, Jayce gestured to the living room. ] Of course. You can sit anywhere you like.
Ah, perhaps that is why I sometimes think I am listening to my council members, and when I'm asked a question I realize I haven't heard a word. [Regis chuckles as he follows Jayce in.]
Of course, Clarus generally saves me when that happens. I really should pay him more.
[After settling into his seat, Regis grows more serious.]
Just so you are aware, I recently had 10 years of memories from my life dropped on me. I know we didn't talk about too many details on the post I made, but if I forget anything from our discussion, please forgive me. I'm still sorting everything out.
I've been there. [ There had been so many council meetings derailed by the others that Jayce had started to learn how to drown out the sound of their bickering until there was something worth listening to, and that, unfortunately, was rare. ] Maybe you should, or at least show him that you appreciate it.
[ The only reason Jayce could navigate any of that mess had been because of Mel, but she'd had that council wrapped around her finger long before he ever was a part of it. ]
Ten years? [ Jayce's eyebrows arch up towards his hairline and he looks over at Regis with concern etched onto his face. ] Are you alright? What happened? [ The rest of the conversation could wait, at least for a minute. ]
I do let him know I appreciate him, but he's one of those that tends to brush that kind of thing off.
[Regis' expression becomes determined in an amused sort of way. He's not about to let Clarus get away with it.]
I'll figure something out. We grew up together, so someday I'll hit on the right combination to get more than "It's my duty" out of him.
[Regis nods as Jayce asks his questions. What happened to him, as far as he knows, isn't that common among the Adopted, so it only makes sense the other man is curious.]
As near as I can tell, yes. Ten years. Forgive me if I need a little more time to figure out if I am all right or not. A lot happened. Some good, but also much bad as is often the case when a country is at war.
The whole thing was very strange, I must admit. I received word that Queen Sunna wished to see me, so I went to see her. My first thought was perhaps, after all this time, she was getting back to me about the proposal I gave her. Instead, I barely get into the chambers with her and the next thing I know I am laying on the ground in front of her with a whole lot more memories in my head than I had before and feeling quite a bit older I might add.
[The silver and white in his hair now isn't a fashion statement. He earned that, though, it doesn't really seem real.]
Do you say it? Because with that kind of person, I think you just need to do little things. That's always worked better for me than just saying what I feel. Words sometimes don't mean as much.
[ Not that Jayce was an expert at navigating that kind of thing. More often than not, he fell on his face, but maybe it counted that he tried. ]
It sounds like if anyone can, it'd be you. It's hard not to get to know someone after all that time. [ Jayce didn't grow up with Viktor, not in the same exact way, but he had. The person he was now was because of him, and he wondered if maybe he might have had the same effect on him. ]
Yeah. [ Jayce is still stunned, not really sure what to say. ] Yeah, I'm sure you need time to figure all of that out.
[ Frowning, he nods. ] That sounds like what someone else told me. They aren't here anymore, but they mentioned their own court leader summoning them and then they experienced something similar. I don't remember how many years they'd said, but it was a lot, I think.
